Are You Suffering From Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain is all too common these days, especially as we get older. As we push ourselves, sometimes our bodies pay for it, resulting in injuries to the spine. Sciatica is one of these injuries that millions of Americans suffer from every day.

What is Sciatica?

With over 3 million cases in the United States every year, sciatica is a very common injury. Sciatica is pain, numbness or weakness in the lower spine and lower extremities as a result of irritation of the sciatic nerve. This nerve pain is usually felt in the lower back and radiates into the buttocks and also down the back of the thigh.  It may even radiate all the way to the foot . The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body and controls all of the structures from the waist down to the foot.

Causes of Sciatica

Most commonly, sciatica is caused by a herniated disc or bulging disc pressing against the spinal cord and spinal nerves which form the sciatic nerve. This pressure causes irritation and inflammation of the nerves and other soft tissue structures in and around the spine. The irritation of nerve tissue can cause pain to radiate down into the buttock and/or legs.  This is referred to as radiculopathy.  A herniated disc is a major cause of sciatica; however, other causes of sciatic nerve irritation are misalignment of the lumbar spine and pelvis, flat feet (fallen arches), trauma and muscle spasm. Furthermore, sciatica may also occur during pregnancy or in a patient with spinal stenosis.
